Located in Historic Ellicott City, MD, this Japanese cafe & gift shop was seriously adorable. We had heard good things about Matcha Time so we decided to go and give their desserts a try. We split a matcha latte, green tea waffle ice cream (pictured below), and homemade mochi with red bean. Note: make sure you check out their hanging menu before placing your order because it’s easy to miss, and there are a lot of enticing specials on there.
Our drink was made with almond milk, but soy was also an option. The drink was tasty, but it was a bit too sweet for us. Also, they don’t really do latte art here so if you’re looking for instagrammable coffee shots, go elsewhere. The green tea waffle ice cream was $5.99, and as you can see, the presentation was dope. The ice cream was coated in dark chocolate, drizzled with chocolate sauce, and then garnished with strawberries and whipped cream. The homemade mochi was quite possibly the highlight of the meal, but you must get it with red bean – the rice cake had a really nice texture to it, but it would’ve been bland without the topping.
Their gift shop featured a bunch of different items from Japan along with adorable crafts made in the US by Japanese and American artisans. There was also a variety of award-winning teas, treats, in-house made pastries, sushi, and ramen available for purchase.
Their desserts and drinks were only just ok, but we’d recommend Matcha Time Cafe anyway because it had a really cute vibe, and we love supporting small businesses. It’s a great place to go for a casual coffee date, and parking’s free so that’s a huge plus! They have a massive lot out front, which is super convenient. Where are your go-to local spots?
