Nomsters! We’ve had such an awesome year and we hope you’ve had a blast following along and hopefully learning and exploring new restaurants on both coasts with us. Continuing our end of the year round ups, we’ve compiled our top 10 dishes of 2017 from our food adventures in the SF Bay Area, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the recap (in no particular order)!
1. Aria’s Sweet and Spicy Fried Chicken: One of our favorite experiences was at Aria in San Francisco, a Korean tapas joint puts their own spin on Korean street food. Their Sweet and Spicy Fried Chicken was off the chain! It was just the right amount of spicy, and they ONLY use dark meat that they pick up fresh every couple days, so you know you’re getting the best and most flavorful stuff. 2. Cookie Love’s Milk Chocolate Blueberry and Caramel Apple-a-Day Cookies: Our trip to Cookie Love in SF was a little embarrassing… We got to shop, had a nice conversation with the owner, set up the cookies and everything was ready to go when we realized that we had forgotten our camera battery at home! Luckily they were super cool about it and we brought the cookies home for a photo shoot in the backyard. All of those cookies you see are different and super unique, but the two mentioned above were definitely our faves (front-left and front-right on the bottom).
3. Flight’s Mac & Cheese: What’s better than mac and cheese? How about THREE different kinds in one order?? The concept of a whole restaurant serving flights of certain kinds of dishes or drinks is original and this flight was, for sure, one of our favorites. From left to right there’s the classic, truffle, and bacon/jalepeno variations. Needless to say, we demolished the whole thing, and the truffle one in the middle was the standout plate.
4. Luce’s Pacific Amberjack: Luce’s been awarded NINE straight Michelin stars, and we can definitely understand why after trying everything out. One plate in particular really stuck out to us since our visit and that’s the one you see below. First off, it tasted phenomenal. But look at that plating and presentation! We were blown away by the artistry that went into creating this dish, and the flavors and texture combinations of the fish, fish roe, and the forbidden rice is something we will never forget. 5. Saffron Indian Bistro’s Dahi Aloo Poori: Next on our list of top 10 dishes of 2017 is from Saffron in San Carlos which was, overall, such a pleasant surprise. They had some of the most colorful, vibrant, and beautiful dishes we have ever seen. The dish below was so memorable because of how unique it was. the fusion of flavors from the poori, diced vegetables, and the fruit made this one crazy refreshing, and with each one being the perfect bite size, it made it even more fun and enjoyable. 6. Rooster & Rice’s “The Original”: How can something that looks so simple be so freakin’ bomb? This is their take on the Thai street food, Khao Mun Gai, and we agree with everything about it. The chicken is moist, the sauce is perfectly complementary, the cucumber adds some refreshment, and if you’re a fan of spicy stuff, you HAVE to add some of the habanero sauce on top. Boom. 7. SPRO Coffee Lab’s Umami Bomb: Avocado toast was definitely the trendy dish of 2017. Had you heard the joke – “avocado toast is the reason millennials (like us) can’t afford to buy houses”? We can believe that. But despite all the mediocre avocado toast around the bay, SPRO found a way to make their version of it one of our favorite dishes of the year. Thanks to an awesome combo of avocado, ikura, togarashi chili, and black truffle citrus ponzu among other ingredients, This is one of the most unique and bomb diggity toasts we’ve had in recent memory. 8. The Baked Bear’s Ice Cream Sandwiches: There are lots of ice cream joints around the Bay that have unique takes on the classic dessert such as ice cream in a doughnut, ice cream with eggettes, rolled ice cream (and let’s be real, all of those are delicious!), but there’s just something about warm, soft cookies and brownies with creamy, smooth ice cream that just hits the spot every time. We got freshly baked funfetti cookies on the outside with a warm, gooey brownie in between scoops of cheesecake and bear batter ice creams. Mind. Blown. Click here to read more about The Baked Bear.
9. Villon’s Ricotta Pancakes: From the outside they may just look like regular pancakes, but holy cow, they’re so much better than that. Here’s another dish where you can tell a lot of thought and passion has gone into creating something both ridiculously nomtastic and super aesthetically pleasing. Because these were made with ricotta, the pancakes were super dense and that was part of what made them incredible. The beautifully laid out fruit and mist of powdered sugar on top added just enough sweetness to satisfy our taste buds all around.
10. Taichi’s Jianbing: Last, but definitely, DEFINITELY not least was the jianbing from Taichi in SF. We had never heard of this traditional Chinese breakfast food before trying it here, but it became an instant favorite within seconds of biting into it. They have several different kinds, but our favorite was the pulled pork with purple cabbage and crispy wontons for a totally satisfying crunch. It’s like a savory crepe, but better, with egg and spices cooked on the outside of the batter. You need this, trust us. Click here to read more about Taichi Jianbing.
