Balboa Cafe: SF’s Not-So-Hidden Gem

Nestled in San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood, Balboa Cafe SF is one of the not-so-hidden gems in the city boasting a menu full of delectable American dishes. It’s been a mainstay in SF since – believe it or not – 1913, and still even has the original signage outside and bar inside. When a restaurant has longevity like that, especially in a food scene as competitive as San Francisco, you know they must be doing something right. And Balboa Cafe SF is doing a lot of things right. We tried their brunch menu, which we’re excited to share with you, so let’s get to it!

Balboa Burger on a Baguette

We’re just going to jump right to highlight of this post! The Balboa Burger is by far the most famous item on their menu, and is consistently included in various lists of the best burgers in SF. This masterpiece is crafted with butter lettuce, house made pickles and onions, and shoestring french fries, and you have the option to add any combination of jack, swiss, blue cheese, cheddar, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, fried egg, bacon or avocado. We 100% recommend at least getting the bacon, cheese of your choice, and caramelized onions, and avocado is never a bad choice either!

Classic Benedicts

Another great choice from Balboa Cafe SF’s brunch menu is their Classic Benedicts! If the burger seems too heavy that early in the day, this one still feels like breakfast, but is definitely filling enough get you fueled up for the day. It’s made with canadian bacon, lemon hollandaise, frisse salad, and a perfectly poached egg all on an english muffin and comes with two in an order.

Deviled Eggs

If you’re looking for a starter to share with the table, look no further than Balboa Cafe SF’s Deviled Eggs. They’re perfectly seasoned, and topped with caviar and bit of chives, and it’s the perfect one or two bite appetizer to get you ready for more.
