Bay Area Cheap Eats: Lunch Special at New Wing Fat Restaurant in San Mateo

In our quest to find delicious cheap eats in the bay area, we stumbled across a true gem in San Mateo. New Wing Fat Restaurant, located on 3rd St. and S. Delaware, is a little hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant with one of the best lunch specials we’ve seen.

For just $8.95 you get everything you see in the photo below! That’s a tray of chicken chow mein, barbecued pork fried rice, barbecued pork, and two fried prawns. And, in case you were wondering, yes, I was completely stuffed

The pork was flavorful and delicious, although it was a little stiff like it may have been overcooked just a tad. That didn’t take away from the lunch plate, though, and all the pieces fit together seamlessly.

Our favorite part of the lunch special was definitely the chow mein, which was springy and provided a savoriness to balance out the sweetness of the barbecued pork.

The fried prawns were also tasty, but they went a little heavier on the batter than I would have liked. I still enjoyed them, and having something fried added a nice texture to the overall lunch special.

If you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck, this lunch special from New Wing Fat Restaurant in San Mateo is one of the best Bay Area cheap eats we’ve found. You get a nice mix of things so it stays interesting throughout the meal, but it would have been nice if they threw in a vegetable of some kind. Either way, we definitely recommend this one if you work or live nearby!
