Scale
- 1 chamomile tea bag
- 8 oz water
- 1 to 2 apple quarters, thinly sliced
Equipment
- kettle
- vegetable peeler
- cutting board
- clear glass or mug
Instructions
- Heat the water. Bring 8 oz of water to a boil in a kettle, then let it sit about 30 seconds so it is just off the boil.
- Prep the apple. Cut an apple into quarters and cut out the core and seeds from one or two quarters.
- Shave thin slices. Using a vegetable peeler, shave the apple quarters into thin, wide slices, keeping the red skin on.
- Roll the rose. Lay the slices in a slightly offset row on a cutting board, then roll them up from one end into a tight spiral.
- Build the cup. Set the apple rose in your cup skin-side up and add the chamomile tea bag.
- Pour and bloom. Pour the hot water in, watch the rose bloom open, and steep for about 5 minutes before sipping.
Notes
- Slice the apple as thin as you possibly can. Thick slices will not curl into petals.
- Leave the skin on so the bloomed rose has that red-rimmed petal look.
- Let the water cool about 30 seconds off the boil so the chamomile does not turn bitter.
- A red-skinned apple like Gala or Fuji makes the prettiest rose.
- Prep the apple rose ahead and hold it in lemon water so it does not brown, then drop it in fresh tea.
