Boozy gummy bears are the easiest party candy going: you submerge regular gummy bears in the alcohol of your choice (chardonnay, Malibu, or vodka) and let them soak in the fridge for about 48 hours. They plump up soft and jiggly as they drink in the booze, turning into a fruity, grown-up snack with a real kick.

I first started making these back in my college days, whenever we had people coming over. Back then I only ever used vodka, but I recently went down a little rabbit hole testing out different bottles, and wow, some of them are so much better than the OG.

They are ridiculously simple, there is zero cooking involved, and they always disappear fast. If you want an easy make-ahead treat that basically does the work for you while you sleep, these are it.

What Makes Boozy Gummy Bears So Good

The magic is all in the soak. Dry gummy bears are firm and chewy, but once they sit in liquor they swell to almost double the size and turn soft, plump, and slippery. Each one holds a little pocket of booze inside that fruity gummy shell, so you get the candy you loved as a kid with a warm, boozy finish.

You also get to control the whole vibe. A wine soak stays light and snackable, coconut rum makes them taste like a tropical vacation, and vodka gives you the strongest, most no-nonsense version. It’s the kind of party snack that feels a little extra without any real effort. If you want another easy sweet-and-sour bite for the same spread, my sweet and sour frozen grapes are just as fun to pop.

What Alcohol Is Good for Gummy Bears?

The best alcohols for gummy bears are ones with a little sweetness or a clean, neutral flavor: chardonnay, coconut rum like Malibu, and vodka are my top three. A rosé works beautifully too, the way The Kitchn does with their wine gummies.

Chardonnay soaks in clean and a little fruity, so those bears are nice enough to set out on their own as a stand-alone party snack. Malibu is the crowd-pleaser, because the coconut plays so well with the fruity gummies. Vodka is the strongest of the bunch and not the most fun to eat plain (especially if you aren’t big on the taste of alcohol), but it is perfect for dropping a few into a cocktail. They make a fun garnish for something easy like our simplest summer cocktail.

How Long Do Gummy Bears Need to Soak in Alcohol?

Gummy bears need about 48 hours in the fridge to fully soak up the alcohol and reach that plump, jiggly texture. You can pull them at 24 hours if you’re impatient, but they will be smaller and firmer with a lighter boozy flavor.

Give them a gentle stir once or twice along the way so the ones floating on top get their turn submerged. Any longer than about three days and they start to get too soft and can break apart, so 48 hours really is the sweet spot.

How Many Boozy Gummy Bears Equal a Shot?

There is no exact science here, but a rough rule is that it takes a good handful, around 15 to 20 soaked bears, to add up to roughly one shot of alcohol. It depends entirely on how long they soaked and which liquor you used, so treat that as a loose guide.

They go down easy and taste like candy, which is exactly why they can sneak up on you. Pace yourself, and always keep them away from anyone under 21.

Tips for Making Boozy Gummy Bears

1. Use fresh, good-quality gummy bears

Fresh, slightly soft gummy bears soak up alcohol better than stale ones. Haribo Gold-Bears are the classic pick because they hold their shape well and don’t dissolve into mush over the soak.

2. Keep them fully submerged

Pour in enough alcohol to cover the bears completely, then press a piece of plastic wrap right onto the surface. The bears float as they swell, so anything poking out of the liquid won’t soak evenly.

3. Match the alcohol to the occasion

Wine and coconut rum bears are great for casual snacking, while vodka bears are better saved for cocktails or for folks who want the strongest version. Set out a couple of bowls with different soaks and let people compare. For even more spirit pairings, Feast + West has a great rundown.

4. Chill the whole time

Always soak in the fridge, never on the counter. The cold keeps the texture firm and the bears fresh over that two-day soak, and it keeps the alcohol from warming up and evaporating off.

Storage and Leftovers

Store leftover boozy gummy bears in an airtight container in the fridge for up to about a week. They keep soaking and softening the longer they sit, so eat them within a few days for the best texture.

Don’t freeze them, since the alcohol keeps them from firming up and the texture turns strange. If you’re building a whole grown-up dessert table around these, a red wine ice cream float is another boozy treat that comes together in minutes.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 cups gummy bears (Haribo Gold-Bears work great)
  • 1 to 1.5 cups alcohol of your choice: chardonnay, Malibu coconut rum, or vodka

Swap in any spirit you like. Rosé, prosecco, tequila, and spiced rum all work well. Just avoid anything super high-proof if you want the bears pleasant to eat on their own.

Instructions

  1. Add the gummy bears to a bowl or container in an even layer.
  2. Pour in your alcohol of choice until the bears are fully submerged.
  3. Press plastic wrap onto the surface, cover the container, and refrigerate for about 48 hours, stirring gently once or twice.
  4. Once the bears are plump and jiggly, drain off any excess liquid if you like, then serve cold. Enjoy responsibly.

If you’re only picking one, chardonnay is the batch I’d hand people as a snack on its own. Malibu works because coconut and fruity gummies get along, and vodka is the strongest of the three and better used in a drink than eaten straight.

Start them two days before you need them and they’ll be sitting there waiting, which is most of why I keep making them. 🙌
