If you’re making s’mores by the fire this summer, you NEED to try this hack 🤯 Instead of a cold chocolate square that never quite melts, you skewer a whole candy bar, dip it in marshmallow fluff, toast the whole lot over the fire, and slide it between two graham crackers. I’ve made s’mores the normal way my entire life and this is the first time the chocolate actually got gooey, which turns out to be the thing I’d been missing.

What Makes This Candy Bar S’mores Hack So Good

What I like is that you’re melting the chocolate instead of hoping a cold square gives up against a hot marshmallow. Skewering the bar and holding it over the flame means the chocolate goes soft and the fluff toasts into a caramelized shell at the same time, so everything hits that melty point together instead of one part being ready and the other not. SO good!

Plus, you get to pick your entire flavor from one bar. Reese’s brings peanut butter, Twix adds caramel and cookie crunch, Kit Kat gives you crispy wafers. It’s the same crispy-gooey contrast I love in my s’mores crunchwrap, just done over an open flame with whatever’s in the bag.

The Best Candy Bars for S’mores

Pretty much any bar works, which is what makes this fun at a fire with a group. A few I keep coming back to.

  • Reese’s for that salty peanut butter against the chocolate
  • Kit Kat for crispy wafer crunch
  • Twix for caramel and shortbread
  • Snickers if you want peanuts and nougat in there
  • Almond Joy for a coconut situation
  • Classic Hershey’s if you’re a purist but still want the fluff-and-skewer method

If you’d rather build fruit into it, my strawberry s’mores wrap marshmallow creme, dark chocolate and crushed graham crackers around a fresh strawberry, and you don’t need a campfire at all.

How Do You Get Melty Chocolate for S’mores?

Toast it, don’t sit there waiting for it. The problem I always ran into is stubborn cold chocolate that never fully melts, and dipping the bar in fluff before toasting is the fix, because the fluff insulates and browns while the chocolate underneath softens from the heat. By the time you press it between graham crackers everything is warm and gooey. Keep the bar a few inches above the flames and turn it slowly so the fluff toasts evenly instead of catching fire on one side. Hershey’s own guide makes the same point about slow rotation over direct heat.

No Campfire, No Problem

You don’t need a fire pit for this. A kitchen torch does the job in seconds, and so does a few seconds under the broiler as long as you stand there and watch it, because fluff goes from golden to black fast. Taste of Home has a good rundown of the indoor methods if you want options.

And if you want the s’mores flavor with zero flames involved at all, my s’mores croissants stuff toasted marshmallows and a Hershey’s bar into a buttery croissant that you just warm in the oven.

Tips for the Best Candy Bar S’mores

1. Let the fire burn down first

You want steady flames, not a raging blaze. I’ve rushed this and scorched the fluff before the chocolate had done anything, which leaves you eating burnt sugar around a cold bar!

2. Coat the bar on all sides

Get the fluff right around it rather than just on top. That full coating is what protects the chocolate while it heats, and I’ve found it’s the difference between an evenly toasted shell and one sad browned stripe.

3. Pick a bar that can take the heat

Solid bars and wafer bars hold up great. Anything with a soft caramel center gets very loose very fast, so if you go Twix or Snickers, be ready to move quickly once it comes off the fire!

Storage and Make-Ahead

This is a make-and-eat-right-now situation, because the entire point is that warm, just-toasted moment. A finished s’more waits for nobody.

What you can prep is the setup. Keep the graham crackers, the fluff and a pile of different bars ready so everyone at the fire builds their own, which is honestly the best way to do this anyway!

Equipment

  • Roasting sticks

Ingredients

Per s’more.

  • 1 full-size chocolate bar (Reese’s, Kit Kat, Twix, Snickers, Hershey’s, whatever you love)
  • 2 tablespoons marshmallow creme (fluff)
  • 2 graham crackers

Substitutions and Swaps

  • The marshmallow fluff. This is the one I wouldn’t swap, because regular marshmallows won’t coat the bar and coating is the entire trick. If fluff is the one thing you can’t get hold of, toast a marshmallow separately and press it on, but you’re back to a normal s’more at that point.
  • The graham crackers. Shortbread, digestive biscuits or even Biscoff cookies all work and Biscoff in particular is excellent here. You want something sturdy, since a thin cracker snaps when you press down on a melting bar.
  • The chocolate bar. I’d go dark chocolate if fluff plus milk chocolate is too sweet for you, since it balances all that sugar. White chocolate melts fastest of the three, so keep it further from the flame.
  • Going nut-free. Skip Reese’s, Snickers and Almond Joy and go Kit Kat, Twix or plain Hershey’s. You lose nothing, since the crunch and caramel are doing plenty on their own.
  • The fire. A kitchen torch or the broiler both work indoors, and a gas burner works in a pinch if you keep the bar moving.

Instructions

  1. Get your campfire going and let it burn down to steady flames rather than a raging blaze.
  2. Skewer your favorite chocolate bar onto a roasting stick.
  3. Dip the bar into the marshmallow fluff so it’s coated on all sides.
  4. Hold it a few inches over the fire and turn it slowly until the fluff is golden and toasted and the chocolate underneath has gone melty.
  5. Slide it off the skewer onto a graham cracker, top with a second cracker, and press gently.
  6. Eat it warm while it’s still gooey.

The problem with a normal s’more is that the chocolate never really melts, it just warms up a little and stays a square. Toasting the bar itself fixes that, and the fluff means you’re not fighting a marshmallow off a stick at the same time.

It’s a camping and backyard fire kind of thing, and it sets up easy for a group since everybody just grabs a bar and goes. 🙌

If you try these, leave a star rating on the recipe card and tell me in the comments which bar you went with. It really helps other people find the recipe, and I want to know if anyone found a bar that beats Reese’s!
