What’s up, Nomsters! Just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco you can find Copita Tequileria y Comida, an incredible, elevated tequila bar and Mexican restaurant in Sausalito, CA! If you’ve never been down towards the water in Sausalito, it’s got such a cool, laid back vibe, and it’s probably the closest we can get to the feeling of a beach town in the Bay. Copita has a well-lit, open ambiance that matches the community perfectly, and their menu is seriously top notch. Created by Larry Mindel and celebrity chef, Joanne Weir, it’s no wonder you can’t go wrong with anything you choose.
Dungeness Crab Empenadas
These may not look as impressive as some of the other plates we had, but the Dungeness Crab Empenadas at Copita were definitely one of our favorites of the day! It’s made with dungeness crab, tomato, and peas inside a plaintain masa drizzled in chipotle aioli. The masa has the perfect amount of crispness that adds some varied texture, the crab is melt-in-your-mouth, and the chipotle aioli brings a pop of spice that keeps each bite exciting. Definitely grab one (or several) of these!
You may think that a wing is a wing, but Copita would beg to differ. These bad boys are rubbed in guajillo and served with habanero butter, avocado crema, and chili powder to top it all off. Maybe it’s just us, but it shows some real skill if you can make great “dry” wings – not slathered in sauce. Anyone can dump some BBQ sauce on, but if you know how to keep the wings moist, yet a tad crispy on the outside, and season it well, we’re choosing your wings all day!
Baja Style Cod Tacos
The Baja Style Cod Tacos were another fave of the dishes we tried. They’re made with house-battered cod, avocado/wasabi/parmesan aioli, cabbage slaw, and micro shiso. Seems like a lot going on, right? Well, you know that feeling when you’re playing Tetris and you happen to get the piece that fits perfectly into the slot? Yeah, they nailed it.
This is a spot we definitely recommend you try at some point! Copita truly expands your mind and perception of what Mexican food is and can be by elevating it, and in some cases, fusing it with flavors from other cuisines. Have you been before?
