Copycat Dole Whip is a homemade version of Disney’s famous frozen pineapple soft serve, and this one takes just three ingredients. You blend frozen pineapple, vanilla ice cream, and a spoonful of sugar until thick and smooth, then swirl it into a cup. It comes out cool, creamy, and tangy, and it is ready in about five minutes.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are from Disneyland, sharing a big swirl of Dole Whip with my family on a hot afternoon. When I found out how ridiculously easy it is to make at home, it went straight into my dessert rotation and it has not left since.

Quick heads up before we start. Someone who used to work at a Disney park told me the actual Dole Whip they serve doesn’t contain any dairy. My version does, because the vanilla ice cream is what makes it so rich and soft-serve creamy. If you’re sensitive to dairy, keep that in mind, and check out the dairy-free swap I mention below.

What Makes This Copycat Dole Whip So Good

The magic is in the contrast. Frozen pineapple keeps it bright and tangy, almost like a tropical sorbet, while the vanilla ice cream rounds it out into that smooth, whippy texture you remember from the park. A little sugar takes the edge off the tartness so every bite tastes like sunshine.

It is also endlessly customizable. Pipe it into a swirl for that soft-serve look, float it on top of pineapple juice for a Dole Whip float, or scoop it straight from the blender when you can’t wait. If you love a good copycat, it lands right next to my copycat Orange Julius recipe in the easy frozen treat category.

What Does Dole Whip Consist Of?

Classic Dole Whip is a soft serve built around real pineapple, and the version sold at the Disney parks is famously dairy-free. My copycat leans the other way on purpose: it is frozen pineapple, vanilla ice cream, and a touch of sugar, so it is creamier and richer than the original. Dole even shares its own dairy-free Dole Whip recipe if you want to match the parks version exactly.

What Makes Dole Whip So Creamy?

The creaminess comes from blending frozen fruit with a fatty, already-churned base instead of just freezing juice. The vanilla ice cream brings air and fat into the mix, so instead of an icy granita you get a smooth, pipeable swirl. Blending in short bursts and not letting it melt is what keeps that thick soft-serve body.

How Do You Make Dole Whip With 3 Ingredients?

You add frozen pineapple, vanilla ice cream, and sugar to a blender and blend until smooth, then serve. That is genuinely the whole method. The only trick is using frozen pineapple (not fresh) so it blends up thick, and going slow so you don’t over-thin it. It is about as low-effort as a copycat dessert gets, right up there with my chocolate covered mandarin oranges.

Tips for the Best Copycat Dole Whip

1. Freeze your own pineapple for the brightest flavor

If you have a ripe fresh pineapple, slice it and freeze the chunks on a tray. Fresh-frozen pineapple tastes noticeably more vibrant. When you’re short on time, a bag of frozen pineapple chunks from the freezer aisle works great and skips all the prep.

2. Keep everything cold

Work fast and keep your ice cream frozen solid until the second you blend. A warm base turns the whole thing soupy. If it starts to melt, pop the blender jar in the freezer for 15 minutes to firm it back up.

3. Blend in short pulses

Pulse and scrape down the sides rather than running the blender nonstop. You want it just smooth, not whipped into liquid. A tamper or the back of a spoon helps push the frozen chunks down toward the blades.

4. Pipe it for the full park look

Spoon the mix into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip and swirl it into a cup. It takes ten extra seconds and instantly looks like the real thing. No tip? An ice cream scoop still tastes amazing.

5. Make it dairy-free

Swap the vanilla ice cream for a coconut or oat-based frozen dessert to get closer to the original parks style. It stays creamy and turns the recipe fully dairy-free.

Storage and Leftovers

Dole Whip is best the moment you blend it, when it is soft and swirlable. If you have leftovers, scrape them into an airtight container and freeze. It will firm up hard, so let it sit on the counter for five to ten minutes before scooping, or give it a quick re-blend to bring back that soft-serve texture.

For another make-ahead frozen treat that keeps well, my frozen berry yogurt clusters are a great one to stash in the freezer.

Instructions

  1. If you are using a fresh pineapple, slice it into chunks and freeze them on a tray until solid. To save time, use packaged frozen pineapple chunks instead.
  2. Add the frozen pineapple, vanilla ice cream, and sugar to a blender. Blend in short pulses, scraping down the sides, until thick and smooth.
  3. Serve right away. Scoop it with an ice cream scoop, or spoon it into a piping bag with a star tip and swirl it into a cup for that classic soft-serve look.
  4. Enjoy immediately while it is still soft.

If you make this copycat Dole Whip, I would love to hear how it turned out. Leave a star rating on the recipe card below and drop a comment to let me know if you went dairy or dairy-free. It is such a fun one to make with kids on a hot day, kind of like a homemade version of the fun you get from tanghulu or the same tropical vibe as my whole mango mochi.

Instructions

  1. Freeze the pineapple. If using fresh pineapple, slice it into chunks and freeze on a tray until solid. Or use packaged frozen pineapple chunks to skip the prep.
  2. Blend everything. Add the frozen pineapple, vanilla ice cream, and sugar to a blender. Pulse and scrape down the sides until thick and smooth.
  3. Serve the swirl. Scoop with an ice cream scoop, or pipe with a star tip into a cup for the classic soft-serve look.
  4. Enjoy. Eat right away while it is soft and swirlable.

Notes

  • Use frozen pineapple, not fresh, so it blends up thick like soft serve.
  • Keep the ice cream frozen solid until the moment you blend so the mix does not turn soupy.
  • Blend in short pulses; over-blending thins it out.
  • For a dairy-free version closer to the Disney parks original, swap in a coconut or oat frozen dessert.
  • Leftovers freeze hard, so soften on the counter for 5 to 10 minutes or re-blend before serving.
