This is how you take Rice Krispies Treats to the next level 😋 A while back I made a video where I cooked them over a fire to get them all toasty, and this one takes it a step further, except you don’t need any fire. I’m a big fan of fluffernutters (I know it’s kind of a kids thing, don’t @ me), so I toasted the bars in the air fryer, spread peanut butter on two and marshmallow fluff on the other two, and pressed them together. I may never go back!

What Makes These Toasted Fluffernutter Treats So Good

Toasting a Rice Krispies Treat wakes the whole bar up. The edges caramelize, the marshmallow softens back into something gooey, and you get that toasted flavor without lighting anything on fire. The air fryer gives me the exact same golden edge the campfire did, in five minutes, indoors.

Then comes the fluffernutter part. Peanut butter on one bar, fluff on the other, press them together, and you’ve got warm toasted crunch on the outside with a salty-sweet creamy center. Crunchy, creamy, toasty, all in one bite. SO good! It’s the same marshmallow fluff I toast over actual flames in my candy bar s’mores hack, just sitting next to peanut butter instead of a melting chocolate bar.

Can You Put Store-Bought Rice Krispies Treats in the Air Fryer?

You can, and it might be my favorite lazy-snack trick going. Unwrap the bars, set them on a sheet of parchment so they don’t stick, and air fry at 350F for about 5 minutes. You want them to flatten out a little and turn golden on top, kind of like a toasted marshmallow. Air fryers all run differently, so peek at 4 minutes the first time.

This trick uses the pre-made bars specifically. If you’d rather melt your own marshmallows and flavor the base from scratch, that’s a different project, like my black sesame rice krispies treats, which grind toasted sesame right into the marshmallow for a nutty Japanese spin.

What Is a Fluffernutter?

It’s a classic sandwich of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, usually on soft white bread, and it’s a New England lunchbox staple. Yankee has the full history, including that Marshmallow Fluff has been made in Massachusetts since 1917. It never really leaves you once you grow up, and I said what I said.

This version swaps the bread for two toasted Rice Krispies Treats, so instead of soft-on-soft you get that crisp, chewy cereal crunch around the creamy peanut butter and fluff. Same nostalgic flavor, way more texture!

Tips for Making Fluffernutter Rice Krispies Treats

1. Always use parchment

Melted-then-set marshmallow gets sticky the second it warms back up. A little square of parchment under the bars stops them welding themselves to your air fryer basket, and cleanup becomes basically nothing.

2. Toast, don’t torch

Five minutes at 350F is the sweet spot. Go much past that and the sugar tips from golden to bitter fast. If your air fryer runs hot, start at 4 minutes and add time in 30-second bursts until the tops are just golden.

3. Spread while they’re warm

Warm bars grab the peanut butter and fluff much better, and everything softens together into that gooey middle. I let them cool for maybe a minute so I don’t burn my fingers, then spread and press straight away.

4. Make it your own

Crunchy peanut butter instead of creamy is a great move if you want even more texture, and cookie butter or a chocolate-hazelnut spread both work. If you’d rather have the flavor baked into the bar itself, my fruity pebbles rice krispies treats fold a whole cup of cereal into the marshmallow base!

Storage and Leftovers

These take about seven minutes start to finish, so I’d just make them when you want them. If you do have one left, wrap it and keep it at room temperature for a day.

They lose the warm gooey middle as they sit, and 30 seconds back in the air fryer softens things up again. I wouldn’t refrigerate them, because cold turns the marshmallow hard and you lose the whole point.

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Parchment paper
  • Butter knife

Ingredients

  • 4 Rice Krispies Treats
  • Peanut butter, to taste
  • Marshmallow fluff, to taste

Substitutions and Swaps

  • The peanut butter. Crunchy is my pick here for the extra texture, and almond or cashew butter both work the same way. For a nut-free version, sunflower seed butter behaves almost identically and tastes great against the fluff.
  • The marshmallow fluff. Marshmallow creme is the same thing under a different name. Regular marshmallows won’t spread though, so if that’s all you have, melt a few first with a splash of water.
  • The bars. Any store-bought crispy rice bar toasts the same way, including the store brand. Homemade bars work too, they’re just softer, so knock a minute off the time and watch them.
  • Going chocolate. A layer of Nutella instead of the fluff turns these into more of a peanut butter cup situation. Different snack, still excellent, and I’d argue equally hard to stop eating.
  • The air fryer. A 350F oven does the same job in about 6 to 7 minutes on a parchment-lined tray. A toaster oven works too and honestly makes more sense for four bars.

Instructions

  1. Take the Rice Krispies Treats out of their packaging and set them on a sheet of parchment paper in the air fryer.
  2. Air fry at 350F for 5 minutes, or until they flatten out a bit and turn golden brown.
  3. Move them to a plate and use a knife to spread peanut butter on two of them and marshmallow fluff on the other two.
  4. Press one peanut butter piece and one fluff piece together, and eat them while they’re still warm.

I don’t think I’m going back to a room temperature Rice Krispies Treat after this. Toasting changes the marshmallow completely, and once peanut butter and fluff are involved it stops being a lunchbox thing and starts being dessert.

Three ingredients and an air fryer, so it’s a solid move when you want something sweet and you’re not about to start a project. 🙌

If you make these, leave a star rating on the recipe card and tell me in the comments what you spread on yours. It really helps other people find the recipe, and I want to know who else is still team fluffernutter!

Instructions

  1. Toast the treats. Unwrap the Rice Krispies Treats and set them on a sheet of parchment paper in your air fryer basket. Air fry at 350F for about 5 minutes, until they flatten slightly and turn golden brown on top.
  2. Add the spreads. Move the toasted bars to a plate. Spread peanut butter on two of them and marshmallow fluff on the other two.
  3. Sandwich and serve. Press one peanut butter bar and one fluff bar together to make a sandwich. Repeat with the second pair, then eat them while they are still warm.

Notes

  • Use parchment under the bars so the sticky marshmallow does not weld to the basket.
  • Start checking at 4 minutes the first time, since air fryers run at different speeds and the sugar can turn bitter if it over-toasts.
  • Spread the peanut butter and fluff while the bars are still warm so everything softens into a gooey center.
  • Crunchy peanut butter adds even more texture, and cookie butter or a chocolate-hazelnut spread both work in place of the fluff.
  • Eat these fresh. Refrigerating makes the treats hard and dry.
