Halloween is the one time of year I fully lean into making food look a little gross, and a little gross is exactly the goal here. There is something so fun about setting out a spread that makes people do a double take before they realize it is just cheese and crackers.
This Halloween charcuterie board is shaped like a creepy severed hand, and it might be the easiest party trick in my whole spooky lineup. It is built from a pre-sliced mozzarella log, prosciutto, string cheese fingers, and a little strawberry jam for the gory effect. No cooking, no special skills, just assembly. I first spotted the severed hand idea floating around from creators like WonkyWonderful, then gave it my own little twist.
How to Make a Charcuterie Board Look Like a Severed Hand
The illusion is all in the layout, and it comes together faster than you would think. You use stacked rounds of mozzarella to build a forearm and palm, wrap everything in prosciutto so it reads as creepy skin, and add string cheese fingers with a shorter pinky and thumb. A spoonful of strawberry jam tucked where the wrist would be does the rest, oozing out like the hand has seen better days. Step back, and a plain cheese plate suddenly looks like a horror prop.
The best part is that nobody needs to know how simple it was. It’s the kind of no-cook, crowd-pleasing party food that vanishes fast, right next to my salmon crispy rice cups.
What Makes This Halloween Charcuterie Board So Good
Beyond the scare factor, it actually tastes great, because it is really just a classic prosciutto and mozzarella board in disguise. You get salty, paper-thin prosciutto, cool and creamy mozzarella, and a little sweet jam to balance the salt, all scooped up on crackers. It’s the kind of grazing food everyone gravitates toward at a party.
It is also endlessly flexible. This is the centerpiece, but it plays well with other easy finger foods like my egg roll mozzarella sticks for a full spooky spread.
Tips for the Best Halloween Charcuterie Board
1. Pick the right cheese
For the hand itself, a firm, sliceable cheese holds the shape best, which is why a pre-sliced mozzarella log and string cheese work so well. They are pale, a little waxy, and really look like skin and bone once wrapped. If you want more variety on the board, add cubes of cheddar, gouda, or pepper jack around the edges.
2. Choose your “blood”
Strawberry jam is my go-to because it is sweet and clings nicely, but raspberry jam, a thick berry compote, or even a spoon of marinara all work for the gory ooze. Pick based on whether you want the dip sweet or savory. Speaking of strawberry, my strawberry s’mores are another easy way to use up the jar.
3. You can build it ahead, with a catch
You can assemble the hand a few hours in advance, cover it loosely, and keep it in the fridge until guests arrive. Add the jam and the crackers right before serving so the crackers stay crisp and the jam doesn’t soak in. Pull it out about 15 minutes early so the cheese loses its fridge chill and tastes creamier.
4. Arrange the crackers and snacks around it
Line crackers along the side of the board like a fan, and tuck in other crunchy bites to round it out. A handful of spam chips adds a salty, crispy contrast that disappears fast.

Storage and Leftovers
Cured meat and fresh cheese are best eaten the day you set them out, so I wouldn’t save an assembled board for long. If you’ve untouched, still-wrapped prosciutto and cheese left over, refrigerate them separately and use within a few days. Once the board has been sitting out at room temperature for more than two hours, it is time to toss it for food safety. Ingredients

- 3 oz prosciutto
- 3 mozzarella string cheese
- 3 tbsp strawberry jam
- Crackers, for serving
Equipment
- Charcuterie Board
- Kitchen Scissors
- Chef Knife
How to Make the Halloween Hand Charcuterie Board
- Separate the pre-sliced mozzarella log into about 5 two-slice pieces and arrange them to create the forearm and palm, leaving a little space between the two. Wrap each section in prosciutto.
- Cut 3 mozzarella string cheeses in half the long way. Wrap 5 of the halves in prosciutto and arrange them as fingers, trimming the pinky and thumb a little shorter.
- Spoon the strawberry jam into the gap between the forearm and palm so it oozes out like blood.
- Fan the crackers along the side of the charcuterie board around the hand.
- Serve right away, and enjoy the double takes.
If you put together this Halloween charcuterie board, I want to see your creepiest version. It is proof that the spookiest food on the table can also be the easiest.
