Description
These crispy air fryer hot honey mozzarella sticks have a seasoned panko crust and a sweet-and-spicy hot honey toss, with no deep fryer required.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 oz block low-moisture mozzarella
- 1 cup panko
- 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 2 Eggs
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- Zab's hot honey, for tossing
Equipment
Instructions
- Set up your breading station. In one bowl mix the panko, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Whisk the eggs in a second bowl. Add the flour to a third.
- Cut the cheese. Slice the mozzarella block lengthwise into two thin pieces, then halve those to make 4 sticks.
- Double coat. Dredge each stick in flour, then egg, then panko, then back into the egg and panko again, pressing to seal the edges.
- Freeze. Freeze the coated sticks for at least 2 hours, until solid.
- Air-fry. Preheat the air fryer to 390F and cook the sticks for about 6 minutes, until golden brown.
- Toss and serve. Tumble the hot sticks in hot honey and serve right away.
Notes
- Freezing the breaded sticks for at least 2 hours is what stops the cheese from leaking, so do not skip it.
- A firm low-moisture mozzarella block works far better than soft fresh mozzarella.
- The double coat (egg and panko twice) seals the edges where cheese tends to escape.
- Toss in hot honey while the sticks are hot so the glaze clings.
- Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350F, never the microwave.
