Ida B’s Table: Modern Soul Food At Its Best

Um, not really sure why we waited so long to try Ida B’s Table.  If you’re looking for good eats in Baltimore, you need to head on over stat.  Chef David Thomas and his culinary team make dreams come true…food dreams at least.  The restaurant’s run by him and his wife, Tonya Thomas, and they’re a force to be reckoned with.  They’ve been working together for the last 25 years; first at the award-winning restaurant, Herb & Soul, and now at Ida B’s.  She runs front of house and is the genius behind their baked goods and desserts.

Our good friend, Leandro Lagera (aka Food Nomad), took us to Ida B’s for dinner the other night, and we’ve been craving their food ever since.  We’ve been creepin’ on their droolworthy noms for weeks on instagram, and we’re excited to tell you guys that it all looked even better in person.  We started our meal off with 3 delicious drinks.  If you’re a cocktail aficionado, you need to come in ASAP and experience their libations firsthand.

We started our meal off with the following three appetizers:

  1. Deviled Egg Trio:  three free-range eggs with the yummiest filling ever, garnished with a crispy chicken skin, pork belly, and pickled veggies.  Priced at a VERY reasonable $5!  We’d come back for these babies alone.  They’re out-of-this-world delish so definitely get an order (or two) for your table when you go!
  2. Octopus Po-Boy Sliders ($9):  marinated grilled octopus served with chipotle coleslaw on brioche buns slathered with sweet potato remoulade.  Hands down, THE most tender octopus we’ve ever had – Chef David’s sliders will seriously melt in your mouth.
  3. Duck Confit Fried Rice:  Unfortunately for you guys, this dish isn’t available to order at Ida B’s.  Chef David generously sent it out for us to taste, and we happily demolished the entire plate.  Topped with a perfectly fried quail egg, the flavor profile was on point…like everything else we had that evening.  Chef offers special menu options daily at Ida B’s Table so be sure to go in often to taste his latest creations.

For our main, we shared the Carolina Pork Chop ($19): an 8 oz grilled chop on top of Carolina Gold Rice perloo served with roasted heirloom carrots.  The meat was so juicy and flavorful, and the accompanying rice had such great texture to it.  As good as this dish was, we’re itching to try their Fried Chicken.  Watch out, Ida B’s!  We’re coming for all the chicken next time, ha.

We couldn’t resist trying their sweets so we shared their famous beignets and their Mississippi Mud Pot de Creme ($9).  Now, the beignets are ONLY available Wednesday mornings so make sure to haul @$$ over there.  You can thank us afterwards because these babies are straight up ridiculous, and we mean that in the best way possible.  We tried to get a shot of Chef David sugaring them up, but our action pics didn’t come out so hot so here’s a photograph of them pre-powdered sugar.  We’re also DYING to try their ube beignets.  Maybe if we bombard them enough on social media, they’ll bring them back, ha.  Here’s hoping *crosses fingers*

A closer look at heaven:  chocolate cream in a chocolate cookie crust, topped with whipped cream, pecans and pretzel bits with homemade caramel sauce.  Need we say more?  It was rich and decadent, but not overwhelmingly so, and we loved that it was big enough to share.  Next on our list is definitely their Brown Sugar Pie.  We hear they’re taking it off their menu soon so we need to get there FAST because brown sugar custard sounds amazeballs.
