Bonchon: Bomb Korean Food in Hanover, MD

Dear Bonchon, thank you for being bomb – we’re over the moon excited about there being solid Korean food in Hanover, Maryland.  There are some pretty good Chinese, Japanese, and Thai places here, but Korean? Eh, not so much.  Nomsters, if you thought they were only good with fried chicken (…we thought they were only good with fried chicken, ha) you’re in for a delicious treat.

We didn’t know they offered other Korean dishes so we were pretty surprised when we saw their menu.  TBH, we had low expectations, but they ended up proving us so, SO wrong.  As expected, their chicken was delicious, but we honestly enjoyed their other plates just as much, if not more.  Let’s get to the nitty gritty.  We grabbed a booth near the window and started our meal off with a Thai Tea and Mango Breeze.  If you’re big into sweet dranks, you’ll absolutely love getting your hands on either one of these babies.

We got the following and shared everything as per usual:  their signature fried chicken in both soy garlic & spicy with pickled radish, their chicken bibimbap, their house fried rice, their salmon avocado ball, their korean tacos, and their bulgogi.  We’re gonna start with their fried chicken since it’s pictured first. They offer a variety of different combos so you’ll definitely be able to find something you like.  As mentioned previously, they have two different flavors – they’re both bomb so we recommend going with half & half to sample everything.  However, if you’re not good with heat, stick with soy garlic.  It’s honestly just as tasty, and your stomach will thank you.  You get to pick a side of your choice (between coleslaw, kimchi, kimchi coleslaw, and pickled radish), but the pickled radish is the way to go.

Then came their salmon avocado ball ($9.95).  The filling was a magical mix of avocado, crab meat, cucumber, and fish roe, and it was wrapped up beautifully in perfectly seared salmon, topped with spicy mayo, unagi sauce, green onions and crunchy tempura bits.

bonchon bulgogi

Next up, their bulgogi ($15.95).  Thinly sliced ribeye beef sautéed with mushrooms and onions in a delicious homemade soy-based sauce.  This was definitely one of our favorite dishes from Bonchon!  Served with white rice and steamed veggies, the flavor profile was on point, and the meat was extremely tender.

The house fried rice ($9.95) was wok stir-fried with seasoned chicken, eggs and veggies, but we subbed seafood for chicken (mini-scallops, calamari + shrimp) for an additional $2 – you can also get bulgogi for the same upcharge.  Everything tasted super fresh so if you’re in the mood for a killer rice dish, definitely indulge.

delicious bonchon bibimbap

Just look at this colorful masterpiece – they seriously don’t mess around when it comes to their dolsot (aka sizzling stone pot) bibimbap.  Priced at $11.95, this dish was yet another standout.  Made with white rice, assorted veggies and topped with a yolky egg, you mix it with korean red pepper paste for next level flavor.  Go easy with it though because it is HELLA spicy!  It’s better to be safe than sorry, right? You can always add more if you want to spice things up.  Add tofu/spicy chicken for an extra $1 or bulgogi/seafood for $2.

Anddd their Korean tacos ($9.95) – another one of our faves, ha.  Yes, we had a lot of faves from Bonchon that night, #dontjudge.  Three warm flour tortillas filled with spicy chicken (or bulgogi if you prefer), crisp lettuce, corn, cheese, onions, buttermilk ranch dressing and spicy mayo.  SO. MUCH. YASSSSS.  FYI, the aforementioned proteins cost an extra $1 – still affordable AF though.

Alright nomsters, that concludes our super yum meal for today.  Their fried chicken is an absolute must-try so if you haven’t had it yet, indulge, BUT don’t forget about their other plates.  We’re definitely going back ASAP to try more, and we recommend that you do the same.  Remember, Korean Tacos and bibimbap – guaranteed to satisfy!  Consider your search for good korean food in Hanover, MD over [insert fist pump].
