When I heard Peter Chang was opening a new restaurant in Charm City, I was beyond thrilled. Ever since Hunan Taste closed in Catonsville, I’ve been searching for a new go-to in the area, but I haven’t had much luck. I’ve been driving to Rockville to get my fix, but the hour long car ride’s getting to be a bit much, which is why I’m extra grateful for Nihao.
I decided to splurge a bit for lunch and got 3 dishes for myself. I was actually kind of bummed when I placed my order because they were sold out of peking duck and shrimp dumplings [insert sad face], but I guess that just means I need to go back again.
For this meal, I got to try their cumin lamb ribs ($19), chili chicken chow mein ($15), and three pepper eggplant and tofu ($15). It’s so hard to judge takeout, especially when your drive back is 20-30 minutes long, but with that said, the food was still delicious. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t crazy about the noodles, but I truly loved the other two entrees.
The lamb ribs were straight fire. They were marinated in mala oil with Chinese herbs and served with the most flavorful corn with a texture so addicting, you end up enjoying it as much as its meaty counterpart. It also came with this incredible dipping sauce, and I don’t know what it was, but all I know is I’m gonna need them to start selling it stat.
Nihao’s eggplant and tofu dish came in a savory garlic soy sauce, and I highly recommend it whether you like tofu or not. It was a toss up between this and their mapo tofu, but I’m really glad I gave this a try because I’ve had the latter at Peter Chang’s Rockville a billion times already.
If you haven’t tried it yet though, definitely make sure to do so. It’s actually one of my favorite dishes to get in general. Their mapo’s going to be much spicier than the eggplant/tofu combo pictured above so it just depends on what you’re in the mood for. I especially loved the textures in this dish. They coated their tofu so it was extra enjoyable, and the peppers gave it a nice crunch.
There’s still so much I want to try so I’m heading back for round 2 soon. One thing to keep in mind before you go though. Rice isn’t included so you’ll want to get as many as you want/need on the side – it’s a dollar a pop though so it won’t break the bank.
