Rooster & Rice: Simplicity at it’s Greatest

Who knew that something so visually simple could pack so much flavor! Rooster & Rice with two locations in San Francisco, CA at 2211 Filbert Street and 303 2nd Street, specializes in Thai street food – specifically, Chicken and Rice (Khao Mun Gai). Upon hearing chicken and rice it didn’t seem like there was much to it. But the way everything is prepared made us realize there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes and “under the hood.”

We got to try The Original, but Rooster & Rice has three other menu items that appeal to different preferences and dietary needs. For The Original, the base was their seasoned rice, which was off the chain. On top of that was their nomtastic broiled chicken. We were worried it would be dry since chicken is easy to accidentally dry out But it was moist and cooked to perfection. The skin left on top ads some nice flavor and probably keeps some of the moisture in. Layered on top of that, you can request various toppings and we got an egg. It was absolutely perfect for breaking the yolk and mixing it up with the rice and chicken to add flavor and texture to everything. It also comes with their special sauce, a side of chopped cucumbers, and a small bowl of chicken broth soup. The soup totally complements the main dish and is a nice way to warm up during these cold months. Winter is coming!

Aside from the main dish, we also got to try their signature Fried Chicken Skin and a bottle of soy milk. The soy milk was great and had a slight sweetness to it, which brought balance to the bit of saltiness there was in the meal. The star of the side dishes was definitely those fried chicken skins though. They’re super crispy, melt in your mouth good, and you just pop them like chips or fries along with your chicken and rice. Literally nothing else could have paired more perfectly. But make sure to get to Rooster & Rice early because they sell out of the chicken skins very quickly each day!

Lastly, if you’re a fan of spiciness, we HIGHLY recommend the habanero sauce! It’s the orange sauce poured on top in the picture below. Once you mix that in with the dark brown sauce that comes with each dish, the chicken, and the rice, it’s straight up bomb. We think this will definitely make its way into our list of spots to regularly hit up!

If you find yourself in the Marina or SOMA, Rooster & Rice is a no brainer. We give this place two thumbs all the way up, and the staff there was awesome and friendly, as well. They also do delivery through Caviar, so give it a try no matter where you are in SF and make your bellies happy. Stay hungry, Nomsters!
