Description

These crispy Spam fries are breaded in panko and air fried until golden brown. An easy Hawaiian inspired snack with a katsu-style crunch, ready in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 can of Spam
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup panko
  • nonstick cooking spray

Equipment

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F.
  2. Cut the Spam: Cut the Spam into slices how you normally would, then stack them up and slice them again, the long way, to create the fries shape.
  3. Set up breading station: Pour the flour into a bowl. Crack the two eggs into another bowl and whisk together. Then pour the panko into a third bowl.
  4. Bread the Spam: Take each piece of Spam and dunk and roll it in the flour, then the eggs, and finally the panko. Set aside on a plate or cutting board. For thicker breading, dunk the Spam in the eggs and panko a second time.
  5. First cook: Once all the pieces of Spam are breaded, spray nonstick cooking spray on the surface of your air fryer and carefully place them inside. Spray a little more cooking spray on the tops of the Spam fries. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Flip and cook: Flip all the Spam fries over, spray a little more cooking spray, and put back in for 5-6 minutes, or until golden brown. Keep an eye on them at this point because it may not take that long.
  7. Serve: Take them out and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

  • For uniform cooking, cut the Spam sticks roughly the same size, about the size of steak fries.
  • Double bread the Spam (egg + panko twice) for extra crunchy katsu-style coating.
  • Press the panko into the Spam after coating to help it stick during cooking.
  • Don’t skip the cooking spray. It’s what helps the panko turn golden brown in the air fryer.
  • Best dipped in tonkatsu sauce, sriracha mayo, or Bachan’s Japanese BBQ sauce.
  • Best eaten fresh from the air fryer. Reheat leftovers at 350°F for 2-3 minutes to crisp back up.
