steakhouse burger crunchwrap

A burger crunchwrap is a homemade crunchwrap folded around steakhouse burger fillings: seasoned ground beef, slow caramelized onions, tangy blue cheese, shredded lettuce, and diced tomato, all layered with melty mozzarella and a crunchy tostada in the middle, then pan-fried until the tortilla seals into a crisp, golden hexagon. It’s a handheld cheeseburger with a satisfying crunch in every bite.

I’m always trying to smuggle steakhouse-burger energy into new formats, and wrapping it up crunchwrap-style might be the most fun one yet. The blue cheese is the part that surprises people. It melts into the warm beef and caramelized onions and tastes like the fanciest burger you’ve ever eaten, except it is folded into a crispy tortilla package you can eat with one hand. WOW is it good.

What Makes This Burger Crunchwrap So Good

The magic is in the layers. You get the crisp outer tortilla, then melty mozzarella, then the crunchy tostada shell hidden in the center, then the warm burger filling. Every bite hits soft, crispy, cheesy, and beefy all at once, which is exactly what makes a crunchwrap so hard to put down (in the best way).

Then there are the steakhouse touches. Deeply caramelized onions bring sweetness, blue cheese brings funk and salt, and the fresh lettuce and tomato keep it from feeling heavy. It’s a burger and a crunchwrap having their best day together, in the same lane as loaded, crispy comfort food like my loaded hash browns.

Can You Get a Burger Crunchwrap at Taco Bell?

No, Taco Bell doesn’t sell one, which is exactly why this steakhouse burger crunchwrap is worth making at home. Their menu Crunchwrap Supreme is built around seasoned beef, nacho cheese, lettuce, and tomato, but there is no burger version with caramelized onions and blue cheese. The homemade route lets you load it like your favorite steakhouse burger instead.

And yes, a crunchwrap absolutely has meat in this version. The Crunchwrap Supreme uses seasoned ground beef, and here we lean into that with a full half pound of beef per two wraps, seasoned simply with salt and pepper so the toppings shine.

What Is a Steakhouse Burger Crunchwrap?

It takes the classic Taco Bell fold and swaps the taco fillings for burger ones. Instead of nacho cheese and taco meat, you get seasoned ground beef, caramelized onions, blue cheese, mozzarella, lettuce, and tomato. It’s the crunchwrap format meets a steakhouse cheeseburger, and it comes together in a pan on the stovetop. If you want the classic version for reference, The Kitchn has a solid copycat Crunchwrap Supreme that shows the fold beautifully.

Tips for Making a Burger Crunchwrap

1. Caramelize the onions low and slow

Real caramelized onions take time, around 40 to 50 minutes over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Don’t rush them on high heat or you’ll get burnt, bitter bits instead of jammy sweetness. The Kitchn has a great walkthrough if you haven’t done it before.

2. Break the beef down small

Use a meat chopper (or the edge of a spatula) to crumble the ground beef into small, even pieces as it cooks. Smaller crumbles pack into the wrap more evenly and give you beef in every bite, no big clumps.

3. Cut a mini tortilla for the top

Trace a tostada onto a tortilla and cut a smaller round to cap the center before folding. This little tortilla covers the filling so the big tortilla folds around it cleanly and seals flat.

4. Keep the fillings in the middle

Pile everything in a tight circle in the center, about the size of the tostada, leaving a wide border of tortilla to fold. Overfilling is the fastest way to a crunchwrap that won’t close.

5. Cook seam-side down first

Place the folded wrap seam-side down in the hot pan and let it cook undisturbed for a few minutes. That first sear glues the folds shut so it holds together when you flip it.

Storage and Leftovers

These are best hot and fresh, right when the tortilla is at its crispiest. If you have leftovers, wrap them tightly and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Reheat in a dry pan or air fryer to bring back the crunch; the microwave works but the tortilla goes soft.

These are great party or game-day food, so if you’re building a spread, pair them with something like my crispy baked chicken wings.

Equipment

Ingredients

Makes 2 crunchwraps.

  • 4 large (10 inch) flour tortillas
  • 2 tostada shells
  • 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella
  • 16 oz ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, chopped (for caramelizing)
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 small tomato, diced
  • Blue cheese, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, salt, and pepper

Instructions

  1. Place a tostada on a tortilla and trace around it with a knife to cut a mini tortilla. Repeat so you have two mini tortillas and two full-size ones.
  2. Chop the onion into long strips. In a pan with a little vegetable oil, cook over medium-low heat for about 50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized. Set aside.
  3. With about 10 minutes left on the onions, cook the ground beef in a little oil over medium heat, breaking it into small pieces with a meat chopper. Season with salt and pepper, then set aside.
  4. Dice the tomato and set aside.
  5. Lay a full-size tortilla down and add mozzarella in a circle in the center, about the size of the tostada. Layer on beef and caramelized onions, then set the tostada on top. Add lettuce, tomato, blue cheese, and more mozzarella. Cap with a mini tortilla and fold the edges of the large tortilla in, pleating, until fully enclosed.
  6. Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Cook the crunchwrap seam-side down for about 3 minutes, until the folds seal and turn golden. Flip and cook another 3 minutes.
  7. Repeat with the second crunchwrap, then slice in half and serve hot.

Instructions

  1. Cut the tortillas. Trace a tostada on a tortilla and cut a mini round. Repeat for 2 mini and 2 full-size tortillas.
  2. Caramelize the onions. Cook chopped onion in a little oil over medium-low heat about 50 minutes, stirring, until jammy. Set aside.
  3. Cook the beef. Brown the ground beef in a little oil over medium heat, breaking it small with a meat chopper. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Prep the toppings. Dice the tomato and set aside.
  5. Build the wrap. On a full tortilla, add mozzarella, beef, and onions in a center circle. Top with the tostada, then lettuce, tomato, blue cheese, and more mozzarella. Cap with a mini tortilla and fold the edges in to enclose.
  6. Pan-fry. Cook seam-side down in a little oil over medium heat about 3 minutes, flip, and cook 3 more minutes until golden and crisp.
  7. Serve. Repeat with the second wrap, slice in half, and eat hot.

Notes

  • Caramelize the onions low and slow; high heat burns instead of sweetening them.
  • Break the beef into small crumbles so it packs evenly into the wrap.
  • Keep the filling in a tight center circle so the tortilla folds and seals flat.
  • Cook seam-side down first to glue the folds before flipping.
  • Reheat leftovers in a dry pan or air fryer to bring back the crunch.
