A Guide to the Best Pizza in DC

For those of you looking for the best pizza in DC, you’re welcome in advance.  It’s been a minute, but we’re back with a vengeance and extra excited to tell you about 8 must try pies in the district.  So without further ado, let’s kick things off with Timber.

1. Timber Pizza Company

Located in the heart of Petworth, Timber’s known for their amazing wood-fired pizzas.  With creative pies like “The Penelope” (pesto, fresh mozz, mushrooms, bacon, and smoked paprika) and “The Bentley” (tomato sauce, provolone, mozz, cured chorizo, soppressata, Peruvian sweet peppers and spicy honey), their ‘za will have your tastebuds dancing.

They’re currently open 7 days a week for take out only.  Their COVID’s menu limited but jam packed with flavor so definitely make sure to stop by and get your fix.

2.  Stellina Pizzeria

Think perfectly fired pizza that will have you coming back time and time again.  Chef Matteo offers a “signature Neo-Neapolitan dough” that’s light, crispy and beautiful.

There’s so much to love, but their Piccante (tomato sauce, house-made spicy sausage, spicy soppressata, salami, ‘nduja jam, and mozz) and Cacio e Pepe (cacio di Roma, pecorino Romano, buffalo mozz, and toasted black pepper) are musts.  Expect a fluffy and crisp exterior with just the right amount of sauce; toppings are plentiful but always balanced.

3.  Vace Italian Deli

Located in Cleveland Park, this unassuming deli’s nothing short of life changing.  There’s a reason they’ve been around for 40 years, and it’s really quite simple.  Their food’s just damn good.

The shop’s known for their pizza and subs, but they have a ton of frozen foods available, in addition to deli meats, cheeses, fresh pastas and dry goods.  Don’t be afraid to get a whole pie because their ‘za freezes really well.

Their marinara has a surprising kick to it, and the crust is nice and crispy.  Buy it by the slice or call ahead – they get hella busy so definitely make sure to call ahead – to get a large for crazy affordable prices.  We recommend their pepperoni but their white pizza with onions slams as well.  Try it for yourself and let us know what you think!

4.  Pupatella

New to DC but definitely not to the DMV!  Pupatella’s known for their incredible Neopolitan pizza, and they’ve been one of our go-tos for god knows how long.  We’ve frequented their original Arlington location far too many times to count so suffice it to say, we’re thrilled they’ve finally opened a brick and mortar in DuPont.

Some of our favorite pizzas include their Capricciosa (sauteed mushrooms, marinated artichokes, prosciutto cotto, and fresh mozz), their Diavola (spicy salami, fresh mozz and basil), and their Prosciutto Arugula (proscitto di Parma, baby arugula, fresh mozz and parmesan cheese).  They also have several white pies available, and we hear awesome things about their Onion Tart so that’s next on our list to devour!

In addition to outdoor seating, they’re currently offering takeout, and they take safety precautions very seriously so they have you pickup your food through a window so you don’t need to go indoors.

5.  Little Beast

Craving Detroit-style pizza in DC?  We gotchu, Nom fam.  Expect thicc – with two cc’s for sure – pies with an airy middle and crunchy bottom.  Their sauce is deep and delicious, and their ‘za comes with copious amounts of melted cheese on top.  Think the epitome of decadence; comfort food at its best.

We recommend Classic Cheese (cheese and tomato sauce), but their Red Wing (fresh garlic, oregano, burrata cheese, parmesan and tomato sauce) is fire as well!  For those of you who’ve tried their Neapolitan style, let us know which you prefer by leaving a comment below.

6.  Andy’s Pizza

Andy’s is a great addition to the DC food scene!  We first tried their pizza at their location in Tyson’s 2 a while back, and their New York style pies were on point.  Their new space in DC’s no different.  Head to Echo Park to enjoy hearty slices with a delicious crust, made from only the freshest ingredients.

You can order whole pies or individual pieces depending on how hungry you are.  Their crust’s thin and chewy with a complexity that comes from the dough’s fermentation process.  The result?  A dope texture that has a yeasty bite to it that you’ll undoubtedly love.

Their carryout space is only a few hundred square feet, but they’ve partnered with the Echo Park Hilton to offer a full dine-in experience with a broader menu.  Our go-tos are their Margherita (red, fresh mozz, fresh basil, parmigiano, and olive oil) and their Pepperoni (red, mozz, and pepperoni), but if you want to try various flavors, opt for “8 Makes a Pie.”  With this, you get to mix and match however you please to assemble the pizza of your dreams.

7.  Emmy Squared

Because we just can’t get enough of Detroit-style pizza.  Although we love Little Beast, we gotta show Emmy Squared love as well because their ‘za slams.  Swing by for unique flavor combinations, fluffy dough, and a cheesy “frico” crust you won’t be able to get enough of.

Their pies are rectangular in shape and cut into 6 squares.  We recommend their Colony (pepperoni, pickled jalapeños, and honey), Quinn (smoked gouda, pecorino, and ricotta) and Angel (ricotta, mushrooms, and truffleist mushroom cream), but you can’t go wrong with anything you get.

Pro tip:  they’re currently offering a delicious family meal for only $58, and it should feed about 3-4 people – available for pickup Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4-6PM.

The package comes with cheesy garlic sticks, brussels sprout salad, caesar salad and your choice of 3 pizzas.  For those of you with dietary restrictions, they offer gluten free options as well so there’s something for everyone.

8.  Duccini’s

You can’t have a DC pizza roundup without mentioning the jumbo slice.  Located in Adams Morgan, Duccini’s is the oldest pizza delivery joint in the area.  Think of it as the ultimate feel good pizza.  It’s delicious, and it sure as hell won’t leave you hungry.

They’re affordable, they’re solid, and they’re open late.  Super late.  Duccini’s is a no frills kind of establishment with ‘za that will hit the spot each and every time.  Get a huge slice of pep – either drunk OR sober – for the ultimate splurge.
