Schroeder’s: Delicious German Food and Beer in SF

What’s up, Nomsters! We’re always in the mood for some legit sausage paired with refreshing beers, and Schroeder’s in San Francisco is the perfect spot to get all that and more. Located in the financial district, they serve tons of delicious German food ranging from sausages to giant pretzels. Originally founded in 1896, it’s definitely one of the oldest restaurants/beer halls still in operation in the city. The original location was destroyed in the massive 1906 earthquake, but was rebuilt at the current location and has been a mainstay in SF ever since.

They recently opened up a parklet for outdoor seating, and it’s a great spot to have some drinks and stuff your face with some bumpin’ tunes in the background. But let’s not waste any more time and just get to the good stuff!

Spicy Bierwurst

Schroeder’s Spicy Bierwurst (left) was our favorite wurst of the evening. The sausage is made with beef, pork, amber ale, and pepper, and has just the right amount of heat so that it doesn’t overpower the other flavors. It’s then completed with a heap of bell peppers and onions and sandwiched in a pretzel bun.

Bratwurst

The Bratwurst is the most basic sausage on their menu, but make no mistake – there’s nothing basic about it! It’s crafted with pork, black pepper, and garlic, and is topped with sauerkraut and Wild Turkey Bourbon Mustard. The savoriness of the sausage combined with the slight tanginess of the mustard and sauerkraut really activate all your tastebuds. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a lager!

Schroeder’s Burger

The Shroeder’s Burger is another awesome option if you’re not feeling sausage-y. You get a 1/3 lb patty with lettuce, tomato, dill pickles, and red onion all between a pretzel bun. You can also add cheddar and/or bacon for an extra $2 each if you’d like. The only thing we can think of to make this burger better would be to add more cheese if you decide to add it. The amount that was on there didn’t really add much to the overall experience. It’s still a super tasty burger, and that pretzel bun is so good!

Buffalo Schwings

The Schwings are a definite must-get when you visit Schroeder’s! A lot of times, buffalo wings are super tiny and dry with the sauce being the only thing providing some moisture. Not these wings, though. They’re a good size, the chicken is moist, and the buffalo sauce is full of flavor. They could possibly be a little spicier, but that’s obviously just personal preference. Don’t miss them!

Tots

The tots are fantastic and are one of the staple side dishes here. They’re nice and crispy on the outside, which is super necessary – there’s nothing as unsatisfying as eating a soggy tot. You can (and should) get an order of these for the table, but also keep in mind that most of the main courses come with a side of tots, too.
