Best Desserts in Sydney: Top 5

2021 Update: This article may be out of date due to restaurant closures during the pandemic. We still stand by any recommendations that are still open.

What’s up, Nomsters! Sydney is such a cool, modern city with so much history and a blossoming food scene. There are a lot of really cool and decadent desserts to be found all over the city so it was tough to narrow it down to this short list! But after walking all over the city (almost literally) we pulled together the ones that we think everyone needs to try. Check ’em out!

Cafe Cre Asion – Matcha Fondant

Cafe Cre Asion is located just south of Hyde Park on a side street away from all the traffic of the city. They offer a full menu of matcha themed desserts and teas, but the standout for us was the Matcha Fondant! It’s a matcha lava cake, which also comes with matcha ice cream. You may be more familiar with a regular chocolate lava cake, and this one is just as delicious. It’s super rich, and the warm matcha cream inside and powder on top take the classic dessert in a totally new direction. This is definitely one of the best desserts in Sydney so make sure to try this one!

Messina – Gelato Cakes

You may not believe it at first glance, but these cakes are beautifully crafted gelato cakes! The exteriors are made of a thin layer of chocolate with various gelato and other sweet goodie fillings. They have personal sizes as well as bigger ones you can buy. It’s not even fair to compare these to ice cream cakes, because there’s so much more that goes into making these. Check out the third photo to see the level of detail inside the cakes!

Our favorite was Dr. Evil’s Magic Mushroom, which was made with dark chocolate gelato, peanut cookies, dulce de leche, flourless chocolate sponge, popping candy feuilletine grass base, and finished with red chocolate glaze and white chocolate dots.

Betty’s Burgers – Concretes

These definitely belong on the list of best desserts in Sydney. The little cups of custard ice cream were so good that we nearly ate all three despite being totally stuffed from demolishing several burgers and fries! The Cookie Butter (left) was our absolute favorite, which was crafted from vanilla custard, crumbled Biscoff cookies, cookie butter, and cinnamon sugar. A close second was the Lemon Raspberry Cheesecake (front), made with vanilla custard, lemon curd, lemon zest, raspberries, New York cheesecake, and ginger crumble. Betty’s Burgers’ burgers are also fantastic so this is one place that’s awesome all around and shouldn’t be missed!

Kusuka – Kopi Pancakes

Kusuka is super bomb Indonesian restaurant/cafe that serves modern twists on traditional dishes. Their entrees are bomb, but their desserts really shine in terms of flavor and presentation. The Kopi Pancakes are an awesome example of this. Their pancakes are homemade and topped with peanut butter, vanilla ice cream, banana slices, and palm sugar syrup. Notice the addition of sprinkled rose and gold flakes? Get it when you go!

Gelatissimo – Gelato

Gelatissimo has locations all over Sydney and for good reason – their gelato is bomb! We had three scoops on a regular waffle cone, but they also have cones with chocolate and sprinkles if that’s more your speed. We tried their Choc Mint, Vanilla, and Veronese Chocolate (hazelnut and chocolate gelato combined with gently-roasted hazelnuts and crispy wafer pieces) and it was all delicious! Be sure to try the Veronese Chocolate, but they have TONS of flavors, so mix and match to your heart’s content!
